It’s always a pleasant bonus when an Appaloosa makes the cover of someone else’s magazine. In this case, the September issue of Horse & Rider provides the stage and the spotlight. The star cover girl is a filly sired by Maid Dignified and owned by Bernice Schroer of Carson City, Nevada. The photo is by Gail Bates
Our own local celebrity Juli Thorson, H&R Lifestyle Editor, says it’s been quite a while since an Appaloosa made the cover of the mag. The feature story is by Robin Gollehon, a member of Team Horse & Rider, who discussed how to evaluate a weanling that you’ve bred or are thinking of buying. Most of you know Robin as an active participant in ApHC events at the national and even global levels.

Ridden in Video by Brianna Brown Age 8. Foaled 3/24/2006 Whata Vision Maker, a.k.a. Canelo (Cinnamon) Stands right at 15.1 hands and weighs in at 950lbs. As a Red Road leopard app, he is turning out to be a beautiful Kid Safe horse. Canelo has spent the last four months in training, two months by Heather Proctor owner of Horse Haven Barn. He has earned the following show placings. *1st. - 2 year old Pleasure *2nd - 2 year old Pleasure *1st in Class - Halter *Reserve Grand Champion overall - Halter *2nd in Class - Halter, and others. His grand sire is a 5 time world champion, his sire a 2 time world champion and 3 time regional champion in halter. On the dam side, multiple winnings that cover several generations (e-mail me for pedigrees). Notes from Heather Proctor, Horse Haven Farms: Trainer Canelo is by far the most quiet 2 year old I have ever worked with. He has yet to spook at anything I have put in front, behind, or under him. He is very laid back and quiet on the trails, crosses water, bridges, and is traffic safe. Not only is he super quiet, but he is an excellent and eye-catching hunter under saddle prospect. He has great movement and long reaching strides. He has a long lopey canter that covers ground easily and a sweeping trot with little bend in the knees. Although he hasn't been jumped due to his age, he has wonderful potential as a hunter jumper and has been ridden around and is familiar with the jumps. He has been schooled over ground pole gymnastics with ease. He has a great foundation and is ready for the next step. Please e-mail with any questions or for more pictures.
