We are still in need of a critter for this year! The generous donor makes a tax-deductible gift and the museum generates some much needed revenue to be used for a variety of projects and activities. If you or anyone you know might be interested, here are some of the criteria:

We’d like an Appaloosa that is obviously Appaloosa in appearance; whatever the age, we’d really like to have a horse that is broke to lead, tie, haul, groom, etc. and free of know genetic issues. The donor would be responsible for a vet check for soundness and routine health requirements. If a riding horse, it should be suitable for a wide range of potential new owners.

The donated horse would not need to travel until the raffle drawing (usually October). Delivery arrangements will up to you and the new owner.

Anyone interested in helping the cause can reply here or contact the Appaloosa Museum directly. Crystal White is the museum director and would be delighted to visit with you about the process. Her phone # 208.882.5578 ext. 279 and her email: museum@appaloosa.com. Thanks!

It’s a pretty cool milestone to celebrate the longest running national breed show. If you have not received a printed premium book, all the forms and information are available on the web site. Remember that the pre-entry deadline is May 16th and the stall reservation deadline is May 23drd.

In case you haven’t noticed the teaser ad in the Journal, we’ll be introducing NEW TROPHIES at the show. And we can’t neglect to mention the fact that this year would be a great time to get together with some pals, your regional club or other group to sponsor a buckle and/or a class (or two).

And, take note that the July issue of the Journal will also include the 2011 Appaloosa Yearbook! Special advertising packages and discounts are available — reservation deadline is May 25th.

Hope to see you in Tulsa!

Chris Cox was the featured clinician and once again managed to help boost attendance. In addition to a trade show, extreme trail competition and riding exhibitions, the Expo supported area horse owners by providing a venue for a private treaty sale. The ApHC was an exhibitor and used Appaloosa license plate funds to cover admission tickets for the first 100 youth each day. As you can imagine, the spotted girls in the photo were big hits with the crowd. I’d bet the young filly was the most photographed critter on the grounds all weekend. Gene Winchester’s Happy Heart Ranch, Homedale, Idaho, had the pair on display. Thanks to Emilee Johnson for representing all of us in the Breed Challenge. And thanks to the volunteers who helped with the booth and helped tell the Appaloosa story.

We call it the FPD Pedigree. This new pedigree is very much like our recently added Color and Points pedigrees only it lists the FPD Eligibility status and percentages of the primary horse and all horses in its 3 generation pedigree.

The cost of this pedigree is $10. If a user selects a horse that does not contain any FPD information within its pedigree the web page display a blank pedigree and inform the user that no data exists for the selected horse. They will not be charged for the pedigree if no data is found.

The actually FPD Pedigree description seen online is as follows:
Lists the Registration Number, Foal Date, Sex, FPD Eligibility Status and FPD Percentage of the selected horse plus the Names, Registration Number, Foal Date, FPD Eligibility Status and FPD Percentage of all horses in its 3 Generation Pedigree.

The best part is that AQHA, APHA and ApHC cooperated on the venture. Joe Carter and Alex Ross provided excellent instruction for the combined group. We had 13 ApHC-carded judges participating in the continuing education portion and we had three applicants take our test. Rather than try to list all the folks who helped or hosted, just let me say thanks to everyone who made it a successful week. German hospitality was wonderful and it was great to visit with enthusiastic horse people. A collection of photos is available in the Flickr album (click link at left).

Corpolongo, D.O. died this past weekend while on his way home from a trail ride. “Doc” has been a fixture on ApHC trail rides for many years and has a belt buckle to prove it. He’s participated in more than 100 of ours and probably hundreds of others. He’s most famous for being the official ride physician on the Chief Joseph Trail Ride. Besides being a skilled medical guy, Dr. John was a great character, sage and friend. We’ll have more information about services as they become available.

To say that Doc was a special person is a pretty weak statement. He was one of the best friends and supporters of the ApHC we can imagine and he will be greatly missed.

You can also read the bio from our Hall of Fame page on the website. He was inducted into the ApHC Hall in 2002 and the Trail Ride Hall of Fame in 1995.
